Teammate, Not Technology

I finally understand what I’m trying to say about AI.

I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s taken a couple of years, as that’s the same exact experience I had with Ideaflow: it really wasn’t until after writing the “Book Bite” when “Next Big Idea Book Club” named Ideaflow a “Must Read” that I understood the main beats of the book. To be honest, I think our Harvard Business Review article is a clearer articulation of our main ideas than the book itself — and we didn’t write that until after the book was finished!

Sometimes you’ve got to think about something for years before you really understand what you think.

I’ve been seriously thinking about AI for over two years now, and I’m finally hitting my stride when it comes to my point of view. The fundamental shift I believe everyone must make is from thinking of AI as a technology, to thinking of AI as a teammate.

“Teammate, not technology,” should be a mantra amongst any team or organization that wants to outperform with AI.

I have lots of thoughts on this subject that perhaps I’ll expound in the weeks ahead. For the time being, I’d humbly request you consider how different it would be if, instead of treating AI like a technology roll out, your organization treated it more like introducing a new key hire. Instead of leading with licenses and policies, you’d give folks a sense for this new person’s capabilities and experience. Maybe do a fireside chat, Q&A. (That’s a really great idea I hope someone steals!)

If you’d like to hear a few more thoughts on this topic, I invite you watch this very short interview I recently gave to Entrepreneurship Opportunities. I hope you’ll take a look and let me know what you think.
